As the US men's national team prepares to face Panama in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday, manager Gregg Berhalter has a simple advice for his players: Stick to the process.
A spot in the 2022 World Cup is on the line for the USMNT (2nd place, 22 points). If the team wins, it will be in a strong position to earn a direct berth. It may even happen in front of the home fans if a number of other factors come together. Any other result, on the other hand, leaves the United States with work to do before their House of Horrors in Costa Rica on the final day of qualifying.
The specters of the USA's agonizing qualifying defeat in 2017 linger, and only a victory will entirely erase those memories. The Americans fell on the final day of qualifying to last-place Trinidad and Tobago, missing out on a seat in Russia 2018.
Panama (5th, 18 points) is only four points behind the United States, and the Canaleros have already faced off against the Americans. With a home game against Canada to round off the qualifying slate, a shock road win would strengthen Panama's prospects of qualifying for a second straight World Cup.
