Newcastle may have finally moved on from their Carabao Cup final defeat, as Miguel Almiron's late goal earned them their first win in six games. The forward's curling effort secured a 2-1 win over struggling Wolves, restoring Eddie Howe's team to fifth place in the table.

A guilty-looking Nick Pope was then let off at the other end when he got away with bringing down Raul Jimenez in the area, with VAR ruling that referee Andy Madley had made no clear and obvious error.

After that fortunate escape, the hosts took the lead six minutes later when Isak brilliantly nodded Tripper's free-kick into the far corner.

The lead was nearly doubled when Bruno Guimaraes clipped the crossbar, and a slew of shots were also deflected by a tenacious Wolves defense, which then saw Daniel Podence rattle the crossbar with a rare shot.

The introduction of Pedro Neto at halftime shifted the momentum in Julen Lopetegui's favor, as the substitute had a fierce free-kick beaten away before teeing up Joao Moutinho for a shot that was saved.

An equalizer appeared to be on the cards, and Hwang Hee-Chan delivered, passing into an empty net from close range after Trippier slipped.

Newcastle seemed to wake up, and they went ahead again through another substitute, Almiron, who curled into the far corner after being found in space by Joe Willock.

That was enough to give Howe's side their first win since January and move them to within four points of the UEFA Champions League places, while Wolves remain three points above the relegation zone.
